Learn more about Conditioning Flowers
by Chris Duncan
For me, spring is all about bringing fresh flower into the house. Whether buying your flowers at your local grocery store (my favorite spots are WHOLE FOODS, TRADERS JOES or STEW LEONARDS for best prices and freshness) or going to the Flower District or picking from your own garden, conditioning them to make them last is key.
Tips for Conditioning:
Pick all flowers in the morning or early evening - never in the heat of the day
Put all flowers in water as soon as possible after cutting or purchasing
Always use clean water and clean buckets
Materials should stand at least two hours before arranging
Keeping them over night is best
No foliage should remain below the water line
Cut flower stems at an angle
Remove any broken stems or leaves
Floral Life or other fresh flower “food” extends the life of the flowers and often comes with purchased flowers from the supermarket or florist
Commercially grown flowers may contain pesticides residues- wear rubber gloves or thoroughly wash hands after handling.
